Earthquake, Azenhas do Mar, Portugal - 1999
Size: 136 cm x 98 cm (53 x 38 inches)
Just north of the small town of Cascais in Portugal, is a little hilltop village perched above the sea. It struck me that the jumble of buildings seemed to be collapsing. Of course, it wasn’t an earthquake, but I made it into one. Notice the couple sitting through it, on the cliffs to the right of the picture. They are asleep and oblivious to the destruction that is happening around them. If they don’t look very Portuguese, they're probably not. I photographed them on Brighton beach the year before.
